Warning: Check Your Toothpaste

warning-toothpaste

Since I share a lot of Toothpaste deals with you, I thought it was very important to share this new warning on Toothpaste with you.

If you have Colgate Total in your medicine cabinet, take a look at it.`  Recent studies have have shown that one of the ingredients in it may lead to an increased chance of cancer.`  It’s not in all toothpastes though.

The ingredient is`  Triclosan .30% and it’s used to fight Gingivitis in the Colgate Total toothpaste.`  Check out the details here.

It’s not in the Tartar Protection Whitening Colgate version though so for now we will continue using that to brush our teeth, but the Colgate Totals are going to be delegated to other purposes.

This type of “scare” definitely is encouraging me to try making some homemade toothpaste.`  I’ve seen various recipes online, but think I might give this one a shot that I found on Wellness Mama.

Natural Homemade Toothpaste Ingredients

  • About 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 small packets of stevia powder
  • 15-20 drops of peppermint or cinnamon essential oil (Check here for how to order Essesntial Oils at wholesale price)
  • 10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract (optional)
  • 10 drops myrhh extract (optional)

How to Make Natural Homemade Toothpaste

  1. Melt or slightly soften coconut oil.
  2. Mix in other ingredients and stir well. If using semi-hard coconut oil, use a fork, if not, use a spoon. If you are using completely melted coconut oil, you will need to stir several times while the mixture cools to keep the baking soda incorporated.
  3. Put mixture into small glass jar (I make different ones for each family member)
  4. Let cool completely.
  5. To use: dip toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles. Could also use a small spoon to put on toothbrush.

    • Oh my gosh. That’s definitely a no thanks. Don’t think Plastic in the gums is good at all. Definitely going to be making my own now or at the very least sticking with the most basic toothpaste. No more Fancy stuff for me.
