Thursday Tutorial–Giant Eagle 101.

gianteagle101

I know there are a lot of new couponers out there so I thought I would take a minute today to share some helpful hints for Giant Eagle shopping.`  I’ve been trying to share useful tip in the Giant Eagle Weekly Matchups, but this will put it altogether in one place.

So here’s my Giant Eagle 101:

Giant Eagle sales run from Thursday thru Wednesday.`  I try my best to have the matchups by Wednesday afternoon for the coming week.`  That way you can get your list prepared if you want to be there on day one.

Giant Eagle Coupon Policy

The majority of Giant Eagles will double coupon up to 99 cents with your Giant Eagle Card.`  So that means for a 75 cents coupon you will save $1.50.`  However, you will not get an overage.`  The doubled amount will go down to make the item free.

Legitimate Internet Coupons up to $3 will be accepted, but according to the Giant Eagle Coupon Policy No FREE or BOGO Free Internet Coupons will be accepted.`  I know some stores do allow them, but this is an exception, not the normal.

If you forget to use your coupon at time of purchase, you have 7 days to take the receipt and coupon back to the store to get back the savings.

eoffer

eCoupons

Giant Eagle accepts eOffer Coupons that are loaded onto your Giant Eagle Advantage card prior to purchase.`  These coupons are not doubled, but currently can be used in combination with manufacturer coupons.

The eCoupon will come off before you even start scanning your coupons which shows that the manufacturer coupon does not impact your eOffer.`  This “stacking” does allow for overages at times.

You can load eSavings onto your Giant Eagle Advantage Card from the following sites:

  • Giant Eagle eOffers
  • Shortcuts (not all coupons are available at Giant Eagle.`  If there is a restriction there will be a globe on the coupon.`  Click it and see if it is available at Giant Eagle)
  • Cellfire — Not very many are allowed at Giant Eagle, but some are.
  • SavingStar — The newest eCoupon on the block.
  • Upromise — This won’t come off your receipt, but goes into an account and either goes towards college savings or you can get cash back.

You cannot add every eCoupon to your card because there is a limit of 45 eCoupons on your card at a time.`  When I do the Giant Eagle Matchups, I include the applicable eCoupons so you can add them at that point.

AccuScan Savings

You can save just by knowing the price displayed of a product.`  That’s thanks to the Giant Eagle Accu-Scan Policy.`  If the price on your receipt in higher than the displayed, posted or advertised price you will get the item free.

You just have to take the item and your receipt to customer service and tell the price and where you saw the price.`  They will then verify it.`  You will get the item for FREE.`  If you bought multiples you will just get the difference for any additional items.

This does not apply to milk and liquor, but I can tell you I have taken advantage of the policy quite frequently.`  Definitely a reason why it’s important to check your receipt.

Sale Tips

When a sale price is 2/$4 (or any other combination) you don’t have to buy 2 to get the sales price.`  What it is basically saying is the price is $2 each.`  I bring this up because on my last visit to Giant Eagle a lady grabbed one bread and then said oh, I have to get 2 to get the price.`  I told her she didn’t.

On BOGO deals you don’t have to buy 2.`  Each one will ring up at half price.

On deals that say Spend $$ and Get $ OYNO, the amount required to spend is often based on the shelf (regular) price.`  How you can tell is in the ad it will say Save up to $$ with you GE Card.`  If it says this, the amount needed to spend is based on Shelf Price.` `  Here are 3 things always double check when doing a deal to get a OYNO based on shelf price:

1. At the shelf — Make sure the shelf price of the item you are actually buying will get you to the needed amount. For example a couple weeks ago`  with the Speed Stick there were two varieties. One had a shelf price of $2.99 and the other had a shelf price of $3.99. In order to only buy 3 for $6 and get the OYNO you had to pick the $3.99 variety.

Another reason to check is that some stores shelf prices are different. So while matchups may say shelf $$$$, the price might be totally different at your store.

2. At checkout watch the screen. If it’s going to give the OYNO based on shelf the item will show the Shelf Price with an AC after it and then the discount if you have scanned the card. If it rings up at Sales price instead, that is what it is going to go by.

3. In the ad, it will ring up at shelf price only if it says Save $$.$$ with your Card. Sometimes it just says save with your AC Card. Those won’t work.

These tips are Giant Eagle specific.`  If you are new to couponing, check here for someone helpful tips to get you started.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I left something out.`  So if you think of something else, please leave me a comment.

Thank you for the tips. I have never had giant eagle double any coupon. Do I have to ask the cashier or is it only on certain days?

    • Jessica Sanchez says:

Vicki: I have always had GE do it automatically. I always watch the screen and when one does not, I stop the cahier and ask why. Some of course, say do not double. You may want to speak with someone and find out if your store participates in this policy, or if they exclude this deal. I think they all double 99 cent and less coupons though. Good luck!

This information is very helpful. I’ve been following your blog for a few months now, and am quite jealous of the deals you score. 🙂 Nice work!! Now that I understand a little more about giant eagle’s policy on certain things, I am going to try to keep up! I usually save an even 65%, but I’d love to be closer to the 85% mark. Your website is going to be quite helpful.Thank you for all your hard work!

  3. Have you ever had trouble using catalina coupons from other stores at GE? I go to Meijer, Walgreens, Kroger and Giant Eagle and all have catalinas that print out. At the top of these next to the expiration date it will say ‘store coupon’ or ‘manufacturer coupon’. I’ve tried using a Meijer or Walgreens catalina and GE and they say they won’t accept these, even when it says ‘manufacurer coupon’ on top. They say these are only allowed to be redeemed at those stores. I’ve emailed their corporate office to see what the official answer is and wondered if you’ve had trouble or if anyone else has. Love the match-ups! Thank you!!
