Frugal & Simple Way to Clean Silk Flowers

We took down the` Christmas decorations yesterday and while putting up our regular decorations, I came across some super dusty silk flower arrangements.`  When I say super — I mean layers of dust on top of them from years of neglect.

Recently, I had found a very frugal and simple way to clean them in an old book of Helpful Hints from Heloise so I decided to give it a try. ` All you need is salt (super cheap), a bag and about a minute.

Follow these quick steps to remove the dust from your silk flower arrangements

  • Pour 1/4 cup salt into your bag. ` It can be either brown or plastic. ` I used a Giant Eagle grocery bag since I have quite a few of them around
  • Place the flowers in the bag so the stems are sticking out.
  • Gather the bag around the stems so it’s totally closed.
  • Shake the bag so you know the flowers are being covered by the salt. ` I shook for about 30 to 40 seconds
  • Voila — the dust has been removed.
  • Pull the flowers slowly out of the bag while giving them a little shake to remove all the salt.
  • Place your flowers back in the vase (of course I had to dust that too.)

Super simple, and super frugal.

I did end up changing out the eucalyptus plants. ` It wasn’t because the dust trick wouldn’t have worked on them, but because they had become some dry after 10 years that they fell apart when I took them out of the vase.
