What Helped Us Feel Better

Of course, the antibiotics and prescriptions as well as being able to rest without stressing out helped me feel better, but that’s not all we used.  I have to say Essential Oils have come to the rescue.

Does your Head to start to spin when considering Which Essential Oil Company to use?

It can truly be overwhelming.

Well, I didn’t pick one company, but three because after all shopping around is the best way to save money.   With essential oils though you don’t want to just pick the least expensive oil.  If you do that, you could get an oil that is not good quality and un-pure.

To make it even trickier, the term “therapeutic” means something different for each company.  It does not guarantee that a bottle labeled natural or pure with be an authentic substance.

So what should you look for in a bottle of essential oil?

  • Testing – Especially GC/MS testing since it shows the chemical profile and authenticity.   A GC/MS spec report that is batch specific for the essential oil you are purchasing will support your understanding of the therapeutic applications of the essential oil and potential safety concerns.
  • Cost – If it’s too cheap, it’s probably not pure.
  • Label – While you can’t count on the term therapeutic, look for the Botanical name, plant part, country of origin, distillation date and/or expiration date, chemotype (if applicable), and “Keep Out of Reach of Children” statement
  • A company that has relations with his/her distillers

Using these rules I have picked three companies to buy my essential oils from – Young Living, Plant Therapy and Rocky Mountain Oils.

Essential Oils Have Helped Us Feel Better

Young Living Essential Oils was the first company I used (over 10 years ago), but it’s expensive.  So when I found other companies that met the specifications above and are lower priced, I made a switch.  I’ve been very happy with the results from the Plant Therapy and Rocky Mountain single oils, but there are some blends and supplements from Young Living I will not give up.

One in particular, I will never be without again.  It is Thieves Essential Oil.  Before and during our sickness last year I was actually trying out other Thieves’ substitutes from Plant Therapy (Germ Fighter) and Rocky Mountain Oil (Immune Strength.)  Needless to say after using them and being sick for  4 months, I have switched back to Thieves and will never be without it again.   Any time we start showing signs of illness now, I immediately rub Thieves on our feet to help our immune systems.

Now that doesn’t mean I don’t use any of the blends from the other essential oil companies.  When it comes to colds, I do have a couple I like.

Breath Ease (RMO) or Respir-Aid (Plant Therapy) have been used in a variety of ways.

  • Diffused through the room.  My favorite diffuser is this one by Zaq Noor.  It is very easy to clean and fill and provides a good mist stream.  In addition, it’s  less expensive then the diffuser I bought from Young Living.  Not only that, but the Young Living Diffuser completely died on me during the second month.  In the kids’ rooms I have this InnoGear diffuser and also this InnoGear diffuser.  Each is slightly different, but they both work really well and were under $20 each.  What I like about both of the InnoGear diffusers is the ability to diffuse intermittently.
  • Mixed with Fractionated Coconut Oil and rubbed directly onto chest and back
  • Breathed in directly like you would Vicks Liquid.  In a glass bowl I placed some salt and dripped on about 8 drops of essential oil.  Then I poured in boiling water.  I placed my head under a towel over the bowl and breathed in.  It helps me feel like my chest is open.

Of course, I also pick single Essential Oils to help with respiratory illnesses.

Recently my Go-To for those have been Rocky Mountain Oils (Check at the bottom of the page for my 5 reasons why.)

I use Oregano to help control coughs at night.  It’s super simple too.  Just place a couple drops of Oregano on a Kleenex and place it right next to the bed or even by the pillow.  Yes, the room will smell like a pizza parlor, but in my experience it helps.  Now when it’s been really bad, I have combined that with Nyquil.

Frankincense and Tea Tree Oil

Oregano worked really well for my 14 year old daughter, but when I got bronchitis, it didn’t stop my cough.  After some research, I did find something that really helped me sleep through the night.  It was diffusing Frankincense with Tea Tree Oil.  I just used two to three drops of each and it was amazing how much better my cough was.

So that’s it.  My tips (in addition to prayer) for staying sane, saving money and getting better while the whole house is sick.  Hoping your family has been healthy, but if you’ve been battling illness this year, what’s helped you get through it?
