A great budget saver is to have some quick cooking recipes in your pocket.  Being able to make a meal in 15 minutes will keep you from ordering take out many times.  After all, you don’t get take out most times in 15 minutes.  For me, just driving somewhere takes 15 minutes.

stretch meat with oats

This stockpile meal takes the savings one step further.  In addition to saving by avoiding take-out I have another tip for you.  This one stretches your meat budget with a great tip I found on Pinterest.  I added Oatmeal to my ground beef and nobody even noticed it, not even my husband who notices every trick I try.

In fact, they all gobbled down this chili.

Quick cooking frugal chili recipe that really stretches your ground beef budget.
Author:
Recipe type: Frugal and Fast
Cuisine: Chili Recipe
Serves: 10
Ingredients
  • 2 lbs Ground Beef (I used 85% Ground Round)
  • 1 cup Quick Cooking Oatmeal
  • 1 Large Onion diced (mine was purple)
  • 28 oz can Crushed Tomatoes
  • 28 oz can Diced Tomatoes with basil and oregano
  • 2 cans Chili Beans (drained)
  • 2 TBSP Chili Powder
  • 2 TBSP Cumin
  • 1 Cup Salsa
Instructions
  1. Brown the hamburger with oatmeal and onion. Stir frequently to keep the Oatmeal from burning.
  2. Drain any grease (there won't be much because Oatmel soaks it up)
  3. Add remaining ingredients
  4. Cook until heated through
  5. Serve with Cheese and Chips or Crackers
Normally when I make chili I use 3 pounds of ground beef.  By adding the oatmeal I saved a pound of meat or about $3.49.  The tomatoes and salsa were found in my stockpile. I had picked them up with sales and coupons during a Coupon “High” trip making them very frugal.  The spices and beans are part of my Aldi Staple items and a great deal.

Here’s a breakdown of my costs:

2 pound Ground Beef – $7
1 cup Oatmeal 25 cents
Onion 20¢
Canned Tomatooes $1
Chili Beans $1.20
Salsa 10¢
Spices 10 cents

Total cost for 10 servings was $9.85 or under a dollar a serving.  That’s definitely less than take out and a great money saver.
